Paper coating methods can be categorized into two types: on-machine coating and off-machine coating.
On-machine coating
In on-machine coating, the coating unit is integrated directly into the papermaking line; the coater functions as a specific section of the paper machine. Since the coating speed must match the operating speed of the paper machine, this method is suitable for the mass production of a single type of coated paper.
Off-machine coating
In off-machine coating, the paper machine and the coater are completely separate units located independently of one another. Rolls of base paper produced by the paper machine are transported to the coater's unwind stand, where the coating process is performed as a subsequent stage of production.
